New technology, but old for some...

After have been using a standard tape recorder for my interviews the last 2 years I have no entered the electronic era. The coming interviews performed by me will use Ipod and ITalk to record the interviews.

The wav file are going to be transformed by using WinLAME and the interview it self are going to be transcribed using the tool Transana 2. A software where you make comments related to timestamps on the original recording to reduce the risk of analyzing transcribed data.

I keep you updated about how everything works.

Full speed

After have participating in three scientific conferences this summer, my research have now started to speed up in order to reach the goal of a Licentiate thesis finished in late May or early June next year.

I am right now designing a larger study of implemented e-services in public organisations in Sweden. More information will be added here later on.

Google desktop

The new Google desktop search seems like an improvement since the first Beta version.

I think they have made the desktop search very usable, try it if you want!

Google supports PIM

Google is making several tools that makes personal information management easier to perform. Beside their traditional search engine am I using their desktop search and their new e-mail service Gmail. Gmail is still on Beta test. The unique with Gmail is the space of storage. You have 2GB of storage, which makes it possible to keep every mail. You can search after the e-mail you want.

These kinds of services and tools support the need for personal management of information, which also may include personal records.

Proactive approach

A proactive approach has been identified as necessary when designing and developing information systems managing records or archival information. This proactive approach has also been identified by researcher in the area of legal information management and technology. I am going to participate in a conference in Stockholm named Nordic School of Proactive Law Conference 2005. Please visit their website if interested:

Rain

A lots of rain is falling at the High Coast of Sweden. The work with my research planning is proceeding, and feels like it is fruitful.

Last week did I have a speach at the archive network in Y-County (Västernorrland). I talked about the research performed here at Mid Sweden University and how I think the e-era are going to change the working situation for both archivists and record managers. Instead of being responsible for preservation my vision is that archivist work proactive with information management on strategical level.

Hard work

At the moment am I preparing a draft for a research paper aimed to be sent to IRIS28. The paper is co authored together with Lena-Maria Öberg, the second PhD student in our project. The purpose with the research paper is to make the concept record operational. The empirical data is collected and now is only the hard handicraft left, to write the paper and analyse the data and present the findings in a nice package.

At least are we not in an extreme hurry :)

Current work

Right now am I working on two separate studies, which will end up in at least two research papers before summer.
My research interest is beginning to narrow down, and the ambition of my research gets clearer. At this point everything feels ok, but on the PhD study journey will this probably change both once and twice.
