Update

Hi everyone

After a rather quiet fall, I now will be better to update the Blogg.

I am involved in two book projects. One project is I am one of four authors that write a chapter on problems with long term preservation and integrated and complex e-services. The book will hopefully be launched this year.

The other book project is a book that deals with OAIS model, the ISO reference model for open archive information systems. I am not writing anything about OAIS, but my contribution is on recordkeeping in small and medium sized companies.

So when the books are launched I let you know.

Need a new job?

If you apply for a new position please look at this:)

An update

I have been lazy in my updating of this Blog. But now it is time.

This fall I have been teaching a lot and I have also been trying to find new possibilities to get research funds for my aim to continue research.

The teaching have been interesting and I have forced my self to learn new stuff, which is more than necessary if I want to become a full academic teacher, i.e. to combine teaching and research.

But I have not been totally inactive. Me and three colleagues have finished a contribution to a book.I am also in a process of writing the final parts of a a book chapter that should be finished the first of December.

During christmas I should finish an article that I intend to submit as a conference contribution. I really hope that the article will be accepted.

Time to work

After a wonderful vacation during summer I now am back on track. To9day I got a request from Spain about police records and police work practice. They asked me to assist on a course in recordkeeping.

I felt honored and will try to assist them as much as possible. The course should deal with theory as well as case studies. One case should be police records and recordkeeping in police practice. I should represent the practitioner and help the students in increasing their understanding on how police records are born.

Seems to be a interesting teaching assignment.

First 20 days as PhD

Three weeks have passed since I defended my thesis. Have life changed? No!!!! I have just got more to do. I really struggle with writings of applications, two book chapters, a couple of articles, and preparation for the courses I would be responsible for this fall.

But soon I go on vacation, and leave all this behind:)

Defence

Yesterday I defended my thesis was found to pass the defense and have after 4 years of research finally ended my PhD student period.

The defense was followed by a party where several of my friends was participating both from the police and from the academia. My family was also present.

Today I am only tired:)

Just waiting?

I had this idea that the last two week before my public defense of my thesis would be filled with preparation, preparation. But that was only an illusion.

After the local newspaper had a small note about my defense of my thesis many persons have been contacted me. Today a neighbor contacted me about a digital preservation problem in a large public agency. It is wonderful to realize that the local newspaper can give a researcher more impact than scientific journals. Not in the academic community, but in the areas where the practitioners community.

Thought I should have a good time

I thought that I should have much time to prepare my dissertation after I have got the thesis printed, but that was wrong. As a researcher I now have to try to find fundings for future research projects, and that takes time. Writing applications for research fundings is a good practice for an academic career so I better start now.

On Wednesday I will take a break and assist a friend with a team building event for 60 police officers. That should be really motivating.

Pre-seminar

Last week I had my pre-seminar. It was a good seminar, which gave me important suggestions of improvement on my thesis.

The overall decision was that the manuscript was of that quality that the dissertation process could start.
The dissertation is planned to be on the 27 May 2008 in Härnösand. But Murphy can arrive and change everything.

No more beard

Even if I thought the idea with a play-off beard was really funny none in my family thought so. My wife said to that I was like child, and my lovely daughter refused to hug me because of the beard. So....

I do not want to be like a child!
I want to hug my daughter!
=
No beard any more!

playoff-beard

I wonder if I should introduce a new tradition into the academic world, to have a playoff-beard until I defend my thesis?

We'll see what the comments are next week during the pre-seminar.

Pre-Seminar

After almost four years of research and doctoral studies I am now heading for the end. Next Week I will have my pre-seminar on my thesis. The pre-seminar aims to be a final assessment where the quality of the thesis is checked.

I am very happy that the four years of doctoral studies now are going to end. It has been four wonderful years, but also very stressful with too much work on spare time.

But the negative part of beeing almost finished with my thesis is that it also is crucial for me to find new research fundings. You can not becoming a senior researcher if you not are able to continue doing research.

I am at the moment working with applications for research projects. And the projects are only minor related to my previous research.
