Yesterday I returned from a one-day hunting session. For me the day was a success, for the first time, I met and shot three wild boars.
A fantastic animal, quick, very quick

Long time no seen
It was some time since I wrote on the blogg. But I have been writing on my thesis. Finally the work have started to end this PhD student period. At the moment I am writing, writing, thinking, writing, and gets confused. It is a work that must be done so I need to pull my self together and just work.

Finally am I present on Facebook. As researcher in IS/IT it is necessary to adopt and test new phenomena. Facebook seems to be an interesting experience. So if you use Facebook, it is possible to search and find me.

Pre seminar
Today a colleague had a pre-seminar on her thesis. It was very interesting discussion that followed during the seminar. As a PhD student that not yet are finished it is very interesting to listen to what kind of difficulties there is in writing a thesis.
A set of general questions and problems was raised. Questions that have impact on my own research as well.

Publishing dilemma
As PhD student you are always in a dilemma to get your articles published in journals or accepted to conferences. Not just PhD students have that dilemma, but as a PhD student you have to have certain publications finished in four years full time work.
This summer I have been working on a paper about electronic records use in time critical work. In time critical work, access and use of electronic records can serve as important sources of information aimed to base decisions upon. The electronic record should be trustworthy and can be important for critical decisions.
In the Swedish police electronic records are an important information source and gives the police officer a possibility to handle a situation tactical correct.
The paper I have been writing have been accepted for publication in the journal Archives and Social studies. The paper will be revised based on the reviewers comments this autumn, and be published in the issue published in March 2008.

After IRIS
I have been working one week since I returned from IRIS 30, the most enjoyable IS conference I have ever been participating in.
I think it is very difficult to start to work after the summer, but the work-load is heavy and I have nothing else to do than to speed up.

Happy PhD student
Two positive things have happened the last couple of days. First my paper from the EMCIS 2007 conferences has been encouraged to be submitted to a management journal. This means that the paper has some value;)
Another paper about EDM in SME's has been accepted for the IEEE/ACM conference on digital information.
But of course there are some papers that not was that successful ;)!!!
Happy weekend

Valencia was hot
Now has it passed almost two weeks since I returned from Valencia, and the EMCIS conference. The conference was very good, even if it was a very large conference. The keynote speak by David Avison was thoughtful.
During My presentation, I got a couple of good and interesting comments and questions, something always wonderful.
But Valencia was hot, very hot almost 40 degree!
I went to the americas cup arena and saw the defender and the challenger go out to the race area for the third race.
Very crowded, and a wonderful arena!

On my way to EMCIS
I am at the moment spending my Mid summer eve in a hotel at Arlanda airport. No hearings for me this eve, and no "snaps" as well.
Tomorrow I head for Valencia for the EMCIS conference. I hope that I have time to go to the americas cup area some evening.
Most friends think I am so lucky to have a job that gives me possibilities to travel. But I love winter and skiing, so Valencia with 33 degrees is not my first choice as place to visit during my vacation.
I will give you info about the conference
Cheers

A Tragic day
Yesterday was a tragic day for the Swedish police. A young officer was shot during an assignment in Nyköping south of Stockholm. The life of the officer could not be saved and he died later at the hospital.
Another officer was injured during the same assignment.
As a police officer for more than 16 years, this really affect me. Police officers risk their life when they guarantee safety for the public, do not forget this when you meet an officer next time.

Invitation
Today I received an invitation to hold a speech at the yearly AAS conference (Arkivrådet AAS) in Stockholm.
The topic for the speech is: Knowledge Management from a record management perspective. This is a very interesting topic, and I look forward to the conference.

SMEforum
Yesterday we had a seminar in our project SMEdoc. The audience was small and medium sized enterprises in our region. We both presented the research, but the major theme for the seminar was that our participating SMEs presented how an efficient electronic document management support their business activities.
Unfortunately there was not as many participants as we expected, but we have to begin to form our network.
We also had invited Birgitta Fagerström from Växjö University, that are affiliated with information logistics at Ljungby.
There will be a similar seminar this autumn, but with a more focus on "good practice"

Police research network
I have some minor relationship with the police academy at UMEÅ university. They have gathered all researchers interested in police research in a network. Interesting is that we are really two police officers in that network, and both are working in the same county. In total there are not very rare that police officers do research, when they beside the police academy has to study at least a bachelor degree in some other subject, in which they later can become PhD students in. There have been a few officers that have reached a PhD degree, but they are very few.
Professor
Tomorrow two senior researchers that have applied for the post of professor in Archival and Information science at Mid Sweden University, will have a 45 minutes lecture.
After many years the process of getting a full time professor is almost finished. A professor will strengthen our research team, and hopefully, we can in a year or two have own PhD students. The professor will be the first full professor in Archival and information science in Sweden, and this will be of great advantage for Mid Sweden University. For me personal I must admit that it is wonderful to have a professor available in the same corridor, that I am working in. This far have my research been a very lonely journey, and to have other researchers to discuss problems with on daily basis is something I look forward to.
So hopefully we soon can announce that a new Professor has its base in Härnösand;)

Paper Accept
Have got a paper accepted for the conference EMCIS 2007, European and Mediterrean Conference on Information Systems. The conference is held in Valencia, Spain between 24-26 June.
The conference can be found at: http://www.iseing.org/emcis/EMCIS2007/main.htm
From the preliminary program, a couple of very interesting presentations seems to be held.
Valencia in June there might be a risk of very warm weather;) and as a person living in the north I prefer winter!

The life of a PhD student
Last week I recieved a reject on a paper that I submitted to a conference. It sucks when the reject mail arrives, but after while the fighting spirit is getting back.
I realize that I still am under education and to be a researcher some minefields must be crossed. Never the less did the reviewers give me constructive feedback, which can help me to improve the paper.
As always, tough ain't enough

Skiing
This week have been a wonderful week which was spent with my family in the a small cabin in the mountains.
The days was spent in the children slope, where my children learned to go downhill. The week was very pleasant.
Now is one week with hard work ahead of me, and then one week of OffPist skiing in Val D'isere:)

Snow finally
Outside the PhD student "Module" is it heavy snowfall. It means that I have to do some body work when I return home.
Snow make me happy and soon will I be skiing in some better conditions than the local mountain can give. And one week later some off piste in Val D'isere :)
Skiing off piste is one of the best ways to charge my motivation, that during winter time can be less than high. It feels quite strange to realize that I within less than 18month is supposed to have my PhD finished and public defended.
The No 1 question is, what do I do then? Commit myself to skiing? Do not know....

Design for the unknown
Information in archives and in recordkeeping systems are going to be preserved for long time. Implicit does this result in a future use and future user that are unknown when the recordkeeping system or archivalmanagement system is designed.
In traditional information system design methods and techniques the users are those that through their needs form the system requirements. But how is this possible when the user is unknown?
This is the challenge I am struggling with at the moment. Design for the unknown and to satisfy an unknown users expectations and needs.
Present are we working on a theoretical method for combining techniques for strategic decision making together with some interaction design techniques. The research is this far very "drafty" but who knows..... Maybe it will result in some conference contribution?
But it is challenging

All these deadlines
This January have been the deadline month!
The 1st We had a deadline for an article about police work
The 22st I have a deadline for an conference
The 30st I have deadline for finishing the revisions of an article
But thats maybe the life as a researcher and a PhD student??? I do not know. At this moment I must get more motivated. Think I want some snow so I can go skiing. Thats makes me happy and almost every obstacle in my life gets easy to pass.

Christmas over
After a Christmas without snow the weekends is now finished. As always the kids got so excited that they didn't know where to go when santa came. But thats how it works.
We are now back in business and to get the kids ready in the morning is a challenge when they for 3 weeks have been used to stay in bed as long as they want. We hopefully manage this morning problem in time before summer....
